A Brief History of……………Wearable Technology for  Everyone!

Wearable Technology-I guess one can argue that wearable technology has existed from the beginning of time, in one form or another. It’s safe to say that you guessed it, we are not going back that far. So we will speed it up a little for you!

When thinking in modern terms of wearable technology, I know that the first thing that comes to most minds is watches. Either pocket or wristband.

Pocket watches have been around since the 1500’s and we also know that according to The Guinness World Book of Records, the first wristwatch was made for a woman, Countess Koscowicz of Hungary, by Swiss watch manufacturer Patek Philippe in 1868. Although it was the first timekeeping device to be designed specifically for use on the wrist, it was intended primarily as a piece of decorative jewellery. The 20’s ushered in the first digital watch.

The 60’s brought us the first headmounted displays for helicopter pilots and in the 70’s we got pocket calculators. (Although we know that the Chinese had a wearable abacus ring, made with beads of a silver. the ring measured 1.2 centimeter long and 0.7 centimeter wide, dating back to Chinese Qing Dynasty {1616-1911 BC}).

Steve MannAlso, in the 70’s and early 80’s Steve Mann (the father of modern wearable technology) designed and built a number of general-purpose wearable computer systems, including various kinds of sensing, biofeedback, and multimedia computers such as wearable musical instruments, audio-based computers, and seeing aids for the blind. More specifically, in 1981, Mann designed and built a backpack-based general-purpose multimedia wearable computer system with a head-mounted display visible to one eye. The system provided text, graphics, audio, and video capability, and included a handheld chording keyer (for one-handed input). Because of its generality, this system fit the description of what most people would call a “computer” by today’s standards.

Now this brings closer to our time. Since the 80’s, 90’s and the 2000’s, with advancement of new technologies, a whole host of new wearable technology has been invented. Many of which have yet to come to market.

So, we are here to share with you, what the market does have available, right now and you won’t believe how affordable it has become. It really is Wearable technology for everyone!
